AP Comp Homework for 03/13/18

Here is the game plan for THIS week (see additions under "b" and "c" for 3/13):

a. Review all grammar notes from Elements of Style in preparation for a quiz on FRIDAY, 3/16 (PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE). We began reviewing rules 1,2, AND 3 during today's class.

b. Complete the handout that reviews rule # 3 from Elements of Style.

c. The final copies of the Good Writing Files assignment will be due on Friday, 3/16 for a bonus point. If you do not submit your work on Friday, then it must be submitted on Tuesday, 3/20 ONLY. You only have to submit your best two now, and be sure to include analysis of diction AND syntax.

***Read through the grading rubric you were given today, so you are aware of how your work will be evaluated on the AP level.

Include the following in your project:

a. Neat copy of each excerpt from Gatsby
b. Annotated copy of each excerpt (worth 5 points)
c. Your analysis paper for each excerpt that is typed and double-spaced (15 points per each analysis)

This entire project will count for 40 points in total (30 points for the analysis, plus 5 points for the annotations of both files, and 5 points for the self-reflection). I am giving you the extra time to allow you to come to extra help sessions if necessary.

1) Review all of the work on the three good writing files that you have completed thus far, so you may now wisely choose only TWO to focus on for the project assignment.

2) Carefully read the sample good writing file that I created for you that includes analysis of both diction and syntax of an excerpt from The Great Gatsby. Make note of where the purpose is located in the essay response. In addition, use one color to highlight all information that analyzes dictionAND a different color to highlight all information that analyzes syntax. Please note that the colors may overlap.

3) Review rules 7 and 8 on the dash and colon, as well as the previous rules (4,5, and 6) about punctuating properly when combining clauses in Elements of Style. Review the types of clauses and sentences, too.

Please bring your copy of Elements of Style to class tomorrow.

1) Finish completing the back side of the handout that reviews Fitzgerald's style. Use your notes on the types of sentences and clauses.

2) Now that you have determined the sentences types (simple, compound, complex, cd-cx as well as loose, periodic, and balanced) for the passages for all three of your good writing files, add at least one more thing to the BACK SIDE of the analysis charts. Include things like patterns of sentence types and special forms and explain why you feel these sentence types/forms have been chosen.

3) Please review rules 7 and 8 on the dash and colon from Elements of Style for our next class.

AP Comp Homework for 03/01-02/18

1)Complete the handout that reviews types of sentences based on today's lesson. (If absent, read this link for Kinds of Sentences.)

2) Using THE THIRD AND FINAL ONE of the files that I approved for the Good Writing Files assignment, please complete the following:

a. Use ONE FULL SHEET per EACH FILE. Place the page # from the excerpt at the top, and write DICTION on the first side of the handout.

b. Complete the first side of the chart, creating a total of 4 entries that should be addressing the language that was written in bold lettering only that you already annotated. Be sure to put the entries in chronological order and bring this to class tomorrow.

c. INCLUDE one example of SYNTAX on the BACK SIDE. This may include parallelism, punctuation such as the dash, or juxtapostion of details.

If you were absent, print 2 copies of thechart.

3) Due on Monday, March 5:

Read and take notes directly on the packet about sentence variety from Sin and Syntax. Pay special attention to the four types of sentences and examples throughout the packet that illustrate how "form follows content."

1) Fully complete the "Love Connection" handout in the literature section of your notebook. You will need to use your books to do this. If you are absent today, you must get a book from me when you return.

2) Using page 4 of the packet/script of the opening scene to R and J, re-read the monologue by Prince Escalus. Now try your best to highlight the ten most important lines of the monologue. In other words, what lines could be eliminated without changing the understanding of the monologue?

In the literature section of your notebook, create a response to the freewriting prompts about "love" and "tragedy." Be sure to fully fill up the space in your responses, writing at least 5 sentences per paragraph, following the format for a body paragraph (topic sentence, details, clincher statement). Define each word and provide examples to illustrate such terms.

Today in class we reviewed how to write the CONCLUSION to the Writing from Sources essay on being a keeper. Here are the final steps to follow:

1) Compose your conclusion using the steps we reviewed today (Refer to #7 on "What to Do During the Exam" handout you were given last week if you were absent today).
2) Carefully read over AND complete the Check List to the essay. Make any necessary changes based on feedback you were given by me and your classmates.

Be sure that the paragraph is specific enough in detail and is cited properly (refer again to the handout on citations).

2) Compose the FINAL body paragraph of this essay, using the THIRD text that was mentioned in the introduction. Follow the same format and be sure to use transitions to connect the discussions of your texts.

When you come to class tomorrow, you should have completed at leastFOUR typed paragraphs (introduction and 3 body paragraphs). We will have a lesson on the conclusion during tomorrow's class.

1) Revise your introduction paragraph to the Writing from Sources essay on what it means to be a brother/sister's keeper using the feedback you were given in class today about effective introductions. If your introduction was effective, please try a different lead to give yourself a chance to experiment with style.

2) Using the Writing from Sources essay on what it means to be a brother/sister's keeper, try your best to write the first body paragraph of this essay using the text that you mentioned first in the introduction. You should devote at least four to five sentences to this text in showing how it reveals a definition of a brother's keeper. Try your best to include citations in your writing. Use this handout for further reference on citations if necessary. We will go over citations fully during our next class session.

1) List 7 examples of foreshadowing in this novel in theliterature section of your notebook. List the event, AND then explain what later event was foreshadowed by it.

2) Read and annotate the lyrics to "Eleanor Rigby" , making note of connections to Of Mice and Men. Then write a strong body paragraphexplaining how this song is similar to the novel (characters, themes, etc.). Place this in the literature section of your notebook.

1) Finish reading Of Mice and Men (pages 99-107).

2) In the literature section of your notebook, write a full page (multi-paragraphed) response to the novel's ending. How did it make you feel? What questions do you have? Be sure to neatly write or type your response and use transitions. Avoid plot summary as well! Be prepared to share this in class tomorrow.

2) In the literature section of your notebook, write a paragraph explaining why this chapter is the novel's climax.
